Why can dust equipment not be used for mist?
The contaminant is wet.
It does not cake onto media and cannot be pulsed off.
It coalesces into liquid instead.
That liquid needs a drain path.
Dust collectors have nowhere for it to go.
They blind quickly when used this way.
Where does the recovered coolant go?
Usually straight back to the machine sump.
On a busy machine that is real money each year.
Drain falls and pipe routing have to allow it.
Otherwise it collects and eventually overflows.

Coalescing, centrifugal or electrostatic?
Media, inertia or charge.
Coalescing merges droplets in filter media.
Centrifugal throws them out by spinning the air.
Electrostatic charges and collects the finest.
Only the first has a filter consumable.
Only the last handles smoke well.
Does the coolant type change the selection?
Considerably, and it is often omitted.
Straight oil makes a finer, smokier mist.
Water-based emulsion is coarser and easier.
High speed machining shifts it finer again.
Equipment sized for emulsion may fail on oil smoke.
State the coolant and the operation when enquiring.
How is the unit sized?
From the enclosure and the operation together.
Enclosure volume gives a starting airflow.
Spindle speed and coolant delivery raise it.
Too little flow lets mist escape the door.
Too much draws coolant out of the machine.
Manufacturers publish selection tables.
Where should it be mounted?
On or beside the machine, as short a duct as possible.
Long duct runs collect liquid at low points.
Those become standing pools of stale coolant.
Machine-mounted units avoid the problem.
Weight on the enclosure has to be checked.
Vibration isolation is worth specifying.
What maintenance does it need?
It depends on the mechanism.
Coalescing media is replaced on pressure drop.
Centrifugal drums need periodic washing.
Electrostatic cells need scheduled cleaning to work.
A neglected electrostatic unit stops collecting silently.
Drains need checking whatever the type.
