What are the structural advantages of a circular section?

Equal properties about every axis, so orientation does not matter and the member behaves identically under load from any direction, and the highest torsional stiffness of the three hollow section shapes. It also offers the lowest drag in wind and water, which is significant on exposed towers, marine structures and members in a flow, where the reduction in applied load can be substantial.

Why is round tube preferred architecturally?

Because it reads as one continuous form from every viewpoint, with no edges to catch light differently as you move around it, so exposed steelwork looks consistent. Handrails, balustrade posts, canopy and glazing supports, exposed columns and sculptural work use it for that reason. It is also the most comfortable section to grasp, which is why handrails are round in the first place.

What makes connections harder?

Joining round to round requires profiled or coped cuts so that one tube seats accurately against the curved face of another, which needs either careful marking or profile cutting equipment. Attaching flat components means shaped saddles, curved plates or proprietary fittings rather than simply bolting to a flat face. Fabrication cost is therefore higher than for square section carrying the same load.

Are they better in hygienic applications?

Generally yes. There are no internal corners on the outside surface for residue to collect in, and the continuous curve is easy to wipe down and to inspect. That suits food, beverage, pharmaceutical and laboratory equipment frames and supports. Where sections are welded together, the joints and any crevices matter more than the section shape, so weld finishing remains important.

How should the weld seam be specified?

Explicitly, because on exposed round tube the longitudinal seam runs the entire visible length and any inconsistency in it is obvious. Options range from as-welded through ground flush to fully polished to match the surrounding finish. State the requirement at order, since removing or blending a seam after fabrication is far more difficult and expensive than specifying the correct tube initially.

What sizes and thicknesses are available?

A narrower range than carbon steel offers, in both diameter and wall thickness, with availability varying by grade and finish. Larger diameters and heavier walls in 316 or duplex often carry longer lead times. Confirm availability before finalising a design that depends on a specific size, particularly where several matching diameters are needed across an installation.

How is round tube bent?

By mandrel bending for tight radii and consistent wall thickness, or by roll bending for large radii. Stainless work-hardens as it deforms, so bending requires more force than carbon steel and can cause springback that must be allowed for. Bent handrails and curved architectural work are normally produced by specialists with equipment and tooling matched to the diameter and grade.
