What is sweeping and why does it need its own answer?

It is clearing an entire hook or shelf facing in one movement, and it is the signature of organised rather than opportunistic theft.

An offender runs a hand or an arm along a row and takes everything into a bag in a second or two.

EAS at the door does not prevent it, and a safer on each item does not either - it just makes the haul bulkier.

What stops it is limiting how quickly stock can leave the fixture, which is what anti-sweep devices do.

The lines affected are usually small, resaleable and displayed in quantity: consumables, cosmetics, batteries, medicines.

Recognising the pattern in the loss data is the first step, because the answer is different from the answer to single-item theft.

How do anti-sweep hooks work?

They require a deliberate action - a twist, a ratchet step or a short delay - to release each item, so a continuous sweeping movement takes nothing.

Ratchet hooks index forward one position at a time, and the next item cannot be reached until the previous one has been removed.

Twist-release hooks require the item to be rotated before it will come off the wire.

Time-delay dispensers hold the next item for a few seconds, which a genuine shopper never notices and a sweep cannot work around.

All of them still allow self-service, which is the essential difference from a locking hook.

The right choice depends on the packaging: some pack shapes do not index reliably in a ratchet.

Will a genuine customer notice?

They should not - and if they do, the device is the wrong one for that line.

The whole design goal is that taking one item feels normal while taking twenty is impossible.

A device that requires an awkward manoeuvre costs sales on impulse lines, and that loss is usually larger than the shrinkage it prevents.

Test with real customers rather than with staff who know how it works. Staff can always operate a fixture.

Watch for abandoned items on nearby shelves, which is the sign that people tried and gave up.

If a line needs a device customers notice, the honest comparison is against a locking hook or moving the line behind the counter.

What shelf-based devices are available?

Pushers with controlled gates, shelf-edge barriers, dividers and lockable shelf fronts - the shelf equivalents of an anti-sweep hook.

Pusher systems keep stock faced forward and, with a gate, release one facing at a time.

Dividers prevent an arm being run along a row and take stock from several facings at once.

Shelf-edge barriers add a lip that must be lifted over, which slows bulk removal without impeding a single item.

Lockable shelf fronts are the shelf equivalent of a locking hook and carry the same sales cost.

Pushers also improve presentation and reduce restocking labour, which frequently pays for them independently of the security benefit.

Which lines justify anti-sweep protection?

Lines that are actually being swept - which the loss pattern shows, because stock disappears in blocks rather than in ones.

A shelf that is repeatedly found empty between stock checks is the classic indicator.

Small resaleable consumables displayed in quantity are the usual targets.

Fitting anti-sweep devices across a whole aisle is expensive and unnecessary, and it slows restocking everywhere.

Video review of the fixture usually confirms the behaviour quickly and prevents protecting the wrong line.

Review after fitting. If the loss simply moves to the adjacent fixture, the response needs to be wider than one hook.

Do these devices slow restocking?

Yes - loading a ratchet hook or a delay dispenser takes longer than filling a plain peg, and that labour is a real cost.

Staff have to index items onto the mechanism rather than sliding a handful on at once.

On a high-turnover line replenished several times a day, that adds up.

Pusher systems are the exception: they usually speed replenishment and improve facing.

Train the restocking method explicitly, because a device loaded incorrectly jams or fails to protect.

Include the labour in the decision. On a fast-moving low-value line it can outweigh the shrinkage saved.

What maintenance do they need?

Regular checking for jams and damage - a jammed dispenser looks exactly like an out-of-stock, and a broken hook silently removes the protection.

Mechanical devices handled by the public fail, and nobody reports it.

A jam makes stock unavailable, so it costs sales as well as leaving the fixture looking neglected.

A broken ratchet or a missing gate leaves the line unprotected while everyone assumes it is covered.

Add the protected fixtures to the daily floor walk with an explicit check that the mechanism works.

Keep spares. A device out of action for a week on a targeted line will be noticed by the people taking the stock before it is noticed by anyone else.
