How must an emergency release be wired?
In series with the lock power supply, so operating it removes power directly - not as an input to the access controller.
The purpose of the device is to work when the controller has failed, hung, lost its logic supply or been misconfigured.
A release wired as a controller input inherits every one of those failure modes and provides no guarantee at all.
The correct arrangement puts the unit's normally-closed contacts in the lock's supply so the circuit is physically broken.
A second set of contacts, or a monitored output, tells the access system that the unit has been operated - and that signal is additional to the break, never a substitute for it.
Verify the wiring at commissioning by isolating the controller and then operating the release. The door must still open.
Break glass, resettable or dual action?
Break glass where an operation must be unmistakable, resettable where accidental operation is likely, dual action where a plain button gets knocked.
Frangible glass elements are cheap, obvious once broken and require a replacement element plus someone to fit it.
Resettable units use a plastic element that deforms or a key-reset mechanism, so the door can be restored without consumables. They are common in healthcare and education where operation is frequent.
Dual-action units require lifting a flap or a two-stage movement before the release operates, which cuts accidental activation in corridors and near door handles.
Whatever the type, a resettable unit must not be resettable so casually that its operation goes unnoticed.
Keep spare elements on site. A release left broken because the element is on order is a door that is not secure.
Where should the unit be positioned?
Adjacent to the door it releases, clearly visible, and at a height everyone can reach - with the specifics set by local fire and accessibility regulation.
Most codes require the unit within a short distance of the door leaf so that it is found by someone at the door under stress.
Colour and signage are frequently prescribed, and a unit that does not match the local convention will be missed.
Reach height must work for seated users as well as standing ones, which usually narrows the permissible band.
Do not site it anywhere an arm could get to it from outside, through glazing or any other opening - that turns the safety device into the way in.
Where one release covers several doors - a lobby, an airlock - the arrangement needs explicit agreement with the authority having jurisdiction.
Should operation raise an alarm?
Yes. Breaking an emergency release is not a routine event, and logging it quietly means nobody ever finds out it is being used every day.
The alarm should be immediate and visible to whoever is responsible for the building at that time, including out of hours.
Logging alone is insufficient because access control event logs are rarely read proactively.
The pattern worth catching is habitual use: a release operated regularly because the normal exit route is locked, inconvenient or badly signed. That is a design problem presenting as a security one.
Response procedures should include checking the door, resetting the unit and recording why it was operated.
Supervised wiring on the monitoring circuit catches a cut or shorted cable, which would otherwise disable the alarm silently.
How often should releases be tested?
On the same schedule as the fire alarm test, and the thing tested is the door releasing - not the monitoring signal.
A release whose monitoring contact operates while the lock stays energised has failed in exactly the way that matters, and only a physical test finds it.
Include it in the building's periodic fire safety testing rather than in a separate security regime that may not happen.
Record each test with the door, the date and the result. That record is what an inspector or an insurer will ask for.
Test the fire alarm interface at the same time, since both are about doors releasing when they must.
Where a release has been operated in anger, treat the reset as an opportunity to confirm the whole circuit still behaves correctly.
Can one release cover more than one door?
Sometimes, where the fire strategy allows it - but it has to be agreed rather than assumed, and it must be obvious which doors are affected.
Lobbies, airlocks and interlocked door pairs are the usual cases, where releasing one door alone would not let anyone out.
The risk is a person operating a release expecting a particular door to open and finding it does not.
Signage has to make the coverage unambiguous, and the arrangement should appear on the fire strategy drawing rather than only on the security drawing.
Some jurisdictions require a release adjacent to each door on an escape route regardless, which settles the question.
Where several doors are released together, check the power supply can handle all of them dropping at once without disturbing the rest of the panel.
What happens to the door after the release is operated?
It stays released until the unit is reset - which is deliberate, because a door that relocks by itself after an emergency defeats the purpose.
The unit holds the lock circuit broken, so the door remains free until someone resets it with a key or replaces the element.
That means the door is not secure in the meantime, and the alarm response has to include physically attending it.
Reset should be restricted to authorised staff, since anyone able to reset a unit can also confirm it is working, and anyone able to defeat one can hold a door open.
Record the operation and the reset as separate events so the duration the door was open is visible.
Keep the reset keys controlled and recorded in the same way as any other security key, rather than leaving one taped inside the panel.
