How does a concealed sprinkler operate?

In two stages - the cover plate releases first, then the sprinkler itself.

The plate is held on by a solder or adhesive rated deliberately lower than the sprinkler's own temperature.

When that releases, the plate drops away and the head is exposed to the hot gases.

The head then operates normally when its own thermal element reaches its rating.

That sequence is why head and cover plate are listed together as an assembly.

A plate that does not release leaves a sprinkler that cannot see the fire.

Can I use any cover plate?

No - the plate is part of the listed assembly and must be the one specified for that head.

Plates from different manufacturers are not interchangeable even where they physically fit.

Plate release temperature is matched to the sprinkler's rating, so a plate from a different temperature range breaks the sequence.

Substituting a plate is a defect found at inspection and is more common than it should be.

Spares stock therefore has to include the correct plates as well as the heads.

Custom-colour factory-finished plates are available from the head manufacturer for exactly this reason.

What happens if a cover plate is painted?

It may not release - and unlike a painted exposed head, nothing about it looks wrong.

Paint bridges the plate to the ceiling and adds thermal mass to the release element.

The ceiling simply looks freshly decorated, so the defect is invisible during normal inspection.

Decorating contractors are rarely briefed about sprinkler cover plates.

Factory-finished plates in standard and custom colours remove the temptation entirely.

A painted plate is replaced rather than cleaned, and finding them requires actively looking.

Are concealed heads slower to operate?

Marginally, because the cover plate is a barrier between the fire and the thermal element.

The listing accounts for that, so a listed concealed assembly meets its stated response characteristics.

Where the fastest possible response is the priority, an exposed quick-response head is better.

Quick-response concealed assemblies exist and are widely used in residential and hospitality.

The difference is small relative to the variation caused by obstruction or incorrect positioning.

Design standards specify where each response class is required.

What is the difference between concealed and recessed?

A recessed head is still visible; a concealed head is completely hidden behind a cover plate.

Recessed sprinklers sit partly up inside a deep escutcheon, with the deflector and part of the body projecting.

They are less obtrusive than a standard pendent without the two-stage cover plate arrangement.

Concealed heads sit entirely above the ceiling line with only a flat disc showing.

Recessed heads are simpler, cheaper and have no plate to fail to release.

The choice is usually driven by how much the client cares about the ceiling appearance.

How much adjustment do they allow?

A defined range that is part of the listing, and going outside it is a defect.

Adjustment accommodates variation in ceiling position relative to the pipework.

Set too high and the head cannot deploy correctly when the plate drops.

Set too low and the plate does not sit flush against the ceiling.

The permitted range is stated by the manufacturer and is typically modest.

Where the pipework is badly positioned, the pipework is corrected rather than the head forced.

Where are they normally specified?

Hotels, offices, retail, healthcare and residential - anywhere the ceiling is part of the finished appearance.

Hospitality is the largest single application, since a visible sprinkler in a guest room is unwelcome.

High-specification offices and retail interiors use them throughout finished areas.

Healthcare uses them partly for appearance and partly to reduce ligature and tampering risk.

Back-of-house areas in the same buildings normally use exposed heads.

The additional cost per head is real and is weighed against the ceiling's visual importance.
