What is an air gap?
A physical break in the drain line.

Water falls through open air.
So there is no continuous path back.
It cannot be defeated by pressure.
What is a high loop?
The drain hose taken up, then down.
Fixed just under the worktop.
Above the machine's own water level.
So its water can never reach the joint.
It must be fixed up, not just laid there.
Which of the two should I use?
It depends where you are.
Some regions require the air gap.
Others accept a properly fixed high loop.
A flat hose run satisfies neither.
Check the local requirement.
Where does the waste connect?
Usually to the spigot on the sink trap.
Which is why that spigot exists.
It arrives blanked and must be cut open.
Leaving it blanked stops the machine emptying.

Hot fill or cold fill?

Many machines are cold fill only.
They heat internally to control temperature.
