What are general service hangers for?
Anything without a dedicated kit.
They terminate in a plain hook, eye, loop or threaded end.
The installer attaches whatever is being suspended.
Signage, light fittings, cable baskets and pipework all use them.
So do display equipment and temporary works.
The generality is what makes them useful.
Why does that generality carry risk?
Because nothing about the product tells you what a safe load is.
A purpose-made kit implies the service and its load.
A plain hook implies nothing.
The published working load limit has to be read and applied deliberately.
It cannot be assumed from the cable's appearance.
That makes the rating do more work here than anywhere else in the family.
What actually limits the load?
The weakest component, and frequently that is the anchor.
Cable, gripper, end fitting and anchor each have a rating.
Anchor performance depends on the base material.
A suspension into a lightweight ceiling is limited by the structure.
Thin decks and hollow constructions hold very little.
Calculating the assembly rather than reading one figure is what matters.
Should overhead loads have a secondary wire?
Where a failure would injure someone, it is normal practice.
A safety wire catches the load if the primary fails.
In entertainment and events it is a requirement.
Secondary retention on suspended equipment is specified there.
The consequence of failure governs rather than its likelihood.
Requirements differ between markets and sectors and the local rule applies.
Does the end fitting type matter?
It should suit how the load could move.
An open hook can be displaced by an upward knock.
A closed eye, shackle or locking hook cannot.
Where the load could be lifted or swung, closed fittings are correct.
Open hooks are quicker to attach and detach.
That convenience is only appropriate where accidental displacement does not matter.
How is the drop adjusted?
By the gripper, which locks anywhere along the cable.
The cable is pushed through and locks under load.
A release lever lets it back out for adjustment.
Excess cable is cut off after the drop is set.
That allows a run of items to be levelled after hanging.
One stock cable length therefore suits a wide range of drops.
What about corrosion?
Specify the finish for the environment rather than defaulting.
Standard galvanised cable suits dry internal conditions.
Damp, external and coastal conditions call for stainless.
Pool and chemical atmospheres attack many stainless grades too.
Mixing metals at the fitting can drive galvanic corrosion.
The gripper and end fitting need the same consideration as the cable itself.
