What exactly is being protected?

The machined sealing face and the bolt holes around it.

That face is what makes the joint tight.

It is easily damaged by ordinary handling.

Dragging, stacking, slinging and setting down on concrete all do it.

The pipe body tolerates all of that easily.

The face does not, and it is the expensive part.

Why is face damage so costly?

Because a damaged face cannot seat a gasket evenly.

The joint then either leaks or has to be re-machined.

On large or high-pressure flanges that means removing the spool from the line.

A bruise or a raised burr is enough to cause it.

The damage is small and the consequence is not.

That disproportion is the whole argument for protectors.

Does the face type matter?

Considerably - protectors are made for each type.

A raised face needs the raised portion protected specifically.

That is the only part that actually seals.

A ring-type joint groove is more vulnerable and more expensive to repair.

Flat faces are more forgiving but still bruise.

A generic cover on an RTJ flange protects the wrong geometry.

What do the bolt holes have to do with it?

They locate the protector and stay clear of debris.

Location stops the protector rotating.

Keeping the holes clear matters more than it appears.

A hole full of grit slows assembly considerably.

It can also damage bolt threads during make-up.

Protectors that clip or bolt into the holes achieve both at once.

How well do they need to be retained?

Well enough to survive real handling and months of storage.

A protector held by friction alone falls off at first movement.

Clip-in and bolt-through designs stay put.

On long-term storage retention matters more than the cover itself.

A protector on the ground beside the pipe protects nothing.

Periodic inspection of stored pipe catches ones that have already come off.

Do they have to come off before assembly?

Always, and on critical pipework it deserves a documented check.

A protector left between two flanges is discovered at pressure test.

That is the earliest it will show up.

Bright colours make one obvious before the joint is made.

Counting protectors off is used on critical systems.

It is a more common error than the visibility of the parts suggests.

Are they reusable?

Frequently yes, and on a large project that is a real saving.

They are normally removed at installation and discarded.

Collecting them reduces both cost and waste.

Cracked, deformed or UV-degraded ones should not go back on.

Some are made specifically for repeated use.

Pipe returned to store after partial use needs re-capping just as the original delivery did.
