What is an inner drawer?
A drawer behind a door or below a taller front, invisible when the furniture is closed.
It has no front of its own in the usual sense.
The door or outer front conceals it entirely.
It uses the same sides and runners as any other drawer.
What it lacks is the drawer front and its adjustment.
Everything else follows the parent system.
Why not just use a cupboard?
Because deep cupboards waste the space at the back.
A tall cupboard with a single door has volume nobody can reach properly.
Everything behind the front becomes inaccessible.
Inner drawers convert that depth into something that pulls out.
The whole volume becomes usable.
The appearance does not change at all.
What is the design argument?
Drawer function with a door appearance.
A kitchen can present a clean run of doors.
Behind them it functions as drawers.
That suits designs where a wall of drawer fronts would be visually busy.
It also suits deliberate door lines.
The user gets access without the aesthetic changing.
What is awkward about them?
Two movements instead of one - open the door, then the drawer.
The door has to open far enough to clear the drawer coming out.
On corner and narrow installations that clearance needs checking.
A door that does not open far enough obstructs the drawer.
Handles and adjacent units can restrict door opening.
Checking on the actual installation rather than the drawing avoids it.
Does hinge position matter?
Considerably - a hinge plate in the wrong place obstructs a drawer.
Inner drawers are frequently stacked behind one door.
The internal divisions have to suit the hinge positions.
They also have to suit what is being stored.
Coordinating both at design stage avoids rework.
It is easier to move a hinge than to change a drawer height afterwards.
Do they carry the same load?
The same as an equivalent front-fitted drawer on the same runners.
Sides, runners and load ratings are identical.
Soft-close behaviour is the same as well.
Only the front and its adjustment are absent.
The carcase still has to carry the load.
Ratings are published per system exactly as for any other drawer.
Where are they most used?
Tall cupboards, larder units and beneath sinks and hobs.
Anywhere depth would otherwise be wasted.
Also below a taller drawer front where a second drawer fits.
That arrangement is common in kitchen base units.
Bathroom and bedroom furniture use them similarly.
Wherever access to the back of a deep cabinet is the problem, they are the answer.
