What goes into CEM III?
Cement with a high slag content.
Ground granulated blastfurnace slag.
Commonly more than half the binder.
Some classes contain considerably more.
It is a distinct cement, not a variant.
Why is low heat valuable?
The slag reaction releases heat slowly.
Peak core temperature stays lower.
Thick sections cannot shed heat.
A hot core cracks against a cool surface.
Low-heat cement prevents that.
Where is it standard?
Massive pours of all kinds.
Raft foundations and thick walls.
Large bases and heavy structures.
Dams and similar civil works.
Anywhere section thickness governs.
What does it resist?
Chloride penetration, notably well.
And sulfate attack from the ground.
The pore structure is finer and less connected.
Marine and coastal structures benefit.
So does aggressive ground.
Where does it fall short?
Early strength, and noticeably so.
Slag reacts slowly at first.
Strength at a few days lags CEM I.
Cold weather widens that gap.
Later strength is equal or better.
How does that affect a programme?
Formwork stays in place longer.
Loading has to wait.
Following trades wait behind it.
The schedule must allow for it.
It is not a surprise to absorb late.
Does it look different?
Yes, it is noticeably paler.
That shows in exposed concrete.
Sometimes the paleness is wanted.
Sometimes it is not.
Decide before specifying an as-struck finish.
