Is an ignition coil part of the charging system?

No. It is an ignition component on a spark-ignition engine, unrelated to the alternator and starter beyond sharing the vehicle's supply.

The charging circuit generates and regulates electrical power; the starting circuit cranks the engine.

An ignition coil takes low-voltage supply and steps it up to fire a spark plug, which is a separate function entirely.

Diesel engines have no ignition coils, because they ignite fuel by compression rather than by spark.

What a diesel has instead is glow plugs, which heat the combustion chamber for cold starting and are not an ignition device.

The practical consequence is that a charging or starting fault and an ignition fault are diagnosed with completely different approaches.

What does a failing coil feel like?

A misfire that appears under load and clears at idle - which is the characteristic signature and the reason it is so often missed in a workshop.

Higher cylinder pressure under load makes the spark harder to establish, demanding more voltage from the coil.

A weakened coil can still fire at idle, where pressure is low, and fails when the demand rises.

The result is hesitation, a flat spot or a stumble on acceleration or on a gradient, with a vehicle that idles perfectly.

Heat makes it worse, so the fault often appears after the engine has been working and disappears when cold.

Fault codes usually identify the misfiring cylinder, which narrows it to that coil, that plug or that injector.

How is the coil separated from the plug or injector?

By swapping the suspect coil to another cylinder and seeing whether the misfire follows it - the simplest conclusive test available.

Fault codes name the cylinder, not the component, so the three candidates are the coil, the plug and the injector.

Move the coil to an adjacent cylinder, clear the codes and run the engine.

If the misfire moves with the coil, the coil is faulty; if it stays on the original cylinder, the coil is not the problem.

The same test works for plugs and injectors, done one component at a time.

A compression or leak-down test on the affected cylinder rules out a mechanical cause before parts are replaced at all.

Why does coil-on-plug dominate?

It removes the high-tension leads entirely and lets the engine management control each cylinder's timing independently.

A coil mounted directly on the plug has no external high-tension lead, so there is nothing to track, degrade or arc to earth.

Losses in the lead disappear, so more of the available energy reaches the gap.

Independent control of each cylinder allows finer timing, cylinder-specific knock correction and misfire detection per cylinder.

The cost is that each coil now sits on a hot engine, and heat is the main cause of failure.

It also means a coil per cylinder rather than one or two shared, so a full set is a more significant purchase.

Why do coils fail?

Heat degrading the insulation, and excessive demand from worn spark plugs - the two are related.

Coils sit on top of a hot engine, and repeated heat cycling breaks down the insulation between windings.

A worn spark plug has a wide gap, which needs a higher voltage to jump, and that voltage stresses the coil every firing.

So overdue plugs actively destroy coils, and a coil failure on a vehicle with old plugs has an identifiable cause.

Oil leaking into the plug wells from a failed rocker cover gasket attacks the coil boot and causes tracking to earth.

Vibration and repeated removal also damage the boots and connectors, which produce intermittent faults that look electrical.

Should all the coils be replaced together?

Not automatically - but on a high-mileage engine where one has failed from heat, the others have had the same exposure.

Coils do not wear in the way friction parts do, so one failing does not imply the others are about to.

Where the cause was heat and age, however, all of them have aged equally and further failures are likely.

For a vehicle that cannot afford unplanned downtime, replacing the set at the first failure on a high-mileage engine is a defensible decision.

Where the cause was local - oil in one plug well, a damaged boot - the others are genuinely unaffected.

Replace the spark plugs at the same time if they are anywhere near due, since the access is already open and old plugs shorten the new coils' life.

What should be checked when fitting a coil?

The plug well for oil, the boot condition, the plug gap and condition, and the connector - plus a small amount of dielectric grease where specified.

Oil in the plug well means a leaking rocker cover gasket, and fitting a new coil into oil simply repeats the failure.

Clean the well thoroughly before fitting; debris falling into the cylinder when the plug is removed is a real risk.

Check the spark plug's gap and condition, and read what it tells you about that cylinder's combustion.

Inspect the connector and its locking tab, since a partly seated connector gives an intermittent misfire that looks like a failing coil.

Use dielectric grease on the boot only where the manufacturer specifies it, and torque the coil's retaining bolt rather than overtightening it into a plastic cover.
