Why put the coupling over the axle?
Because the download then adds weight to the drive axle instead of levering it off the front one - which is what allows far heavier loads.
A bumper-pull hitch applies its load behind the rear axle, so the axle acts as a fulcrum and the front axle is unloaded.
A fifth wheel places the load over or slightly ahead of the rear axle, adding weight where traction is needed.
Steering and braking on the front axle are unaffected, which is why the combination stays stable at much higher weights.
Articulation happens at the kingpin, directly above the axle, giving a tighter and more predictable turning behaviour than a long bumper-pull drawbar.
The limiting factor becomes the rear axle's capacity and the vehicle's plated weights rather than the hitch itself.
How is a correct coupling confirmed?
Visually check the jaws are closed around the kingpin, perform a tug test against the trailer brakes, and confirm the apron is flat on the plate with no gap.
Coupling is done blind, so a procedure rather than a judgement is required.
The visual check means getting out and looking at the jaws around the pin, not at the handle position - a handle can be seated with the jaws not closed.
The tug test applies the trailer brakes and gently attempts to pull forward; a correctly coupled unit does not move.
The apron must sit flat on the plate. A gap means the trailer is riding on top of the plate rather than being coupled, which is the high hitch condition.
Also confirm the landing legs are fully raised and the lines are connected and routed clear before moving off.
What is a high hitch and why is it dangerous?
The trailer apron riding on top of the plate instead of the kingpin entering the throat - it looks coupled, and it separates in service.
It happens when the trailer is set too high for the plate, usually because the landing legs were not lowered enough before coupling.
The tractor reverses under the trailer, the plate slides beneath the apron, and nothing engages.
From the cab it can appear normal, and the unit may move off and travel a distance before the trailer drops.
The consequences are severe - an uncontrolled trailer separation with the landing legs retracted.
The tug test and the visual jaw check are specifically designed to catch this, so they are not optional steps.
How is jaw wear assessed?
With a gauge against the manufacturer's limit - excessive free play between the pin and the jaws causes shunting and eventually failure.
The jaws and the lock mechanism wear against the kingpin over many coupling cycles and many kilometres.
Free play shows as a fore-and-aft knock when taking up drive and when braking, which the driver feels as shunting.
Purpose-made gauges measure the clearance and are the correct way to assess it, since the wear is not obvious by eye.
Kingpins wear too and have their own wear limits, so a worn combination can be either part or both.
Rebuild kits for jaws and locking components are available for most plates, and it is normal maintenance rather than a reason to replace the plate.
What lubrication does a fifth wheel need?
The plate surface needs grease or a low-friction liner - it carries very large sliding loads as the trailer articulates.

The jaw mechanism, the pivot points and the release handle also need lubrication, and they are frequently missed when only the plate face is greased.
Is an in-bed pick-up fifth wheel the same thing?
The same principle at a smaller scale - a plate mounted in the load bed over the rear axle, coupling to a kingpin on the trailer.
It is used for large caravans, livestock and equipment trailers behind pick-up trucks.
The mounting is into rails bolted to the truck's chassis, not to the bed floor, since the load must go into the frame.
Bed clearance matters: the trailer's overhang has to clear the cab through full articulation, and short-bed trucks frequently need a sliding or extended hitch.
Capacity is governed by the truck's rear axle and plated weights, exactly as on a commercial unit.
Many of these hitches are removable, which is worth having where the load bed is needed for other work.
What are the daily and periodic checks?

Fifth wheel plates carry an inspection regime in most jurisdictions as part of the vehicle's roadworthiness requirements, with defined intervals.
