What makes a tack different from a small nail?

What are cut tacks and gimp tacks?

Cut tacks have a rectangular section for positive grip in timber frames; gimp tacks have a small decorative head for visible trim lines.

Cut tacks are the traditional upholstery fixing, punched from sheet rather than drawn from wire.

The rectangular section grips softwood frames well and still withdraws cleanly.

Gimp tacks are used where the fixing remains visible along a braid or trim, so the head is part of the finish.

Both are driven repeatedly into the same frames over a piece's life, which is why removability matters.

How do I hold a tack while hammering it?

With a magnetic hammer or a magnetic tack holder - a tack is too small to hold safely between finger and thumb.

Upholstery hammers have a magnetised face that picks up and holds the tack for the first blow.

That first blow is where an ordinary hammer usually catches a finger.

Magnetic tack holders and starters do the same job with any hammer.

Some tacks are supplied with a slightly enlarged head or shank to make them easier to hold.

Pneumatic tackers have replaced hand-driven tacks in most volume upholstery work.

Will a tack hold carpet or flooring?

It will, and it was standard practice - though gripper strip and adhesive have replaced most of it.

Gripper strip holds the carpet under tension without a visible fixing and is faster to install.

Can tacks be reused?

Often yes, if the point is still sharp and the shank is straight - but they are cheap enough that it is rarely worth it.

In upholstery the frame accumulates old holes over successive re-covers, and a fresh position matters more than a fresh tack.

Are tacks suitable for anything structural?

No, and the fact that they come out easily is exactly why not.

A tack holds a fraction of what an equivalent nail holds, in both shear and withdrawal.

The tapered shank that makes withdrawal easy also makes the hold modest.

Anything carrying load, anything overhead and anything that must last needs a proper fixing.

Using tacks to hold sheet material permanently is a common shortcut that fails slowly.

Where a temporary fixing must later be permanent, the tack is replaced rather than supplemented.

What finish should tacks have?

Blued or bright for interior upholstery, plated or stainless where damp or staining matters.

Traditional upholstery tacks are blued, which gives modest corrosion resistance indoors.

In damp conditions steel tacks rust and stain the fabric around them permanently.

Stainless is used in marine and outdoor upholstery for exactly that reason.

Decorative tacks come in a wide range of finishes chosen for appearance rather than protection.

Where the tack is in contact with a natural fibre that will be dampened, the finish matters more than the length.
