Why does an oval nail split timber less?
Because driven with its long axis along the grain it separates fibres rather than wedging them apart.
A round nail displaces fibre equally in all directions, which levers the grain open from the centre.
An oval section presents a narrow edge across the grain, so the wedging force acts in the direction the timber tolerates.
That makes it the sensible choice in finished timber, near edges and in dry hardwood where a round nail would split the piece.
The benefit is entirely dependent on orientation and disappears if the nail is turned the wrong way.
It is not a substitute for pre-drilling in genuinely difficult positions.
Which way round should an oval nail be driven?
With the long axis of the oval running along the grain - turned the wrong way it splits worse than a round nail.
This is the single most common mistake with oval nails and it produces exactly the opposite of the intended effect.
The long axis is easy to feel between finger and thumb before the nail is started.
Once started, the nail is difficult to rotate, so the orientation is set at the beginning.
In a nail gun the orientation is fixed by the collation and the tool, which is one reason oval nails are largely a hand-driven product.
Near ends and edges the orientation matters most, since that is where splitting starts.
What is a lost head nail?
A nail with a head barely larger than its shank, made to be punched below the surface and filled over.
The small head is the whole feature: it passes into the timber cleanly and leaves a hole small enough to fill invisibly.
That is why it is used on skirting, architrave, cladding and joinery where the fixing should not be visible.
The trade is reduced resistance to pull-through, since there is very little head bearing on the surface.
It is not a structural nail and should not be substituted for one.
Brad and pin nails take the same idea further with even smaller heads for lighter work.
How far below the surface should the head be punched?
A couple of millimetres - enough that filler covers it and stays covered when the timber moves.
A head left flush will show through paint and will stand proud as the timber shrinks and swells.
Punched too deep, the hole needs more filler and the nail has less head engagement in the timber.
A nail punch sized to the head is the correct tool; the punch tip should be smaller than the head but not so small that it slips off.
Hammering the last few millimetres bruises the surrounding surface, which shows under a finish as clearly as the nail would.
Filling before priming rather than after gives the best result on painted work.
Can these be used for structural work?
No - smaller heads mean less resistance to pull-through, and structural connections specify round wire nails.
A structural nailing schedule names a nail diameter and length on the assumption of a full-size head.
Substituting a lost head or oval nail because it splits less changes the connection's capacity.
The head is a load-bearing feature in a nailed connection, not a convenience.
Where splitting is a genuine problem in a structural position, pre-drilling or a different nail pattern is the correct response.
These are second-fix and joinery nails, and that is where they belong.
What finish should they have?
Bright for internal painted work, galvanised or stainless outdoors - and stainless wherever staining would show.
Bright nails are the norm internally because they are punched, filled and painted over.
Any nail left exposed to moisture will rust and bleed a brown stain through the finish, which is the classic failure on painted external joinery.
Galvanised nails resist that but the coating can be damaged by the punch.
Stainless is the reliable choice for external cladding and joinery, and for hardwoods whose tannins attack ordinary steel.
Oak and other tannin-rich timbers stain badly around steel fixings even indoors in damp conditions.
When should I choose oval over lost head?
Oval where splitting is the risk; lost head where invisibility is the priority.
The two features are independent, and oval lost head nails exist that provide both.
In dense or dry timber near edges, the oval section is doing the useful work.
On a surface that will be filled and painted, the small head is what matters.
For fine work - beading, small mouldings, thin sections - panel pins or brads are lighter again and less likely to split.
In practice second-fix carpentry keeps both and chooses by the timber in front of it.
