Why does a clout nail have such a large head?
Because the material being fixed is soft or thin and would tear past an ordinary head.
Felt, sarking, mesh and soft sheet have very little resistance to a small head pulling through them.
A large head spreads the clamping load and gives the sheet a wide area to bear against.
On roofing the governing load is usually uplift rather than weight, and head diameter is what resists it.
Extra-large-head versions exist for particularly soft materials.
The head is the specification here in the way that shank geometry is elsewhere.
Why are they so short?
Because they fix a thin sheet to a substrate immediately behind it - extra length achieves nothing.
The holding is developed in the timber just behind the sheet, and a short shank reaches it.
A longer nail risks coming through the far side of a batten or board.
It would also be more likely to split a thin batten.
Where more penetration is genuinely needed the answer is usually a different fastener rather than a longer clout.
Length is chosen from the sheet thickness plus the penetration the substrate needs.
Do they need to be galvanised?
In practice always - they are almost always external or damp, and often in running water.
A rusting clout stains the material around it, which shows immediately on felt and boarding.
As it corrodes the head is lost first, at which point the sheet is unfixed while still looking fixed.
Hot-dip galvanising gives a thick coating and is the normal specification.
Stainless is used in coastal exposure, on long-life roofs and with materials that would be stained by any corrosion.
Contact with treated timber adds a compatibility question that the treatment supplier answers.
Will a clout nail through a roof sheet leak?
A nail through a waterproof sheet is a hole through a waterproof sheet - the detail has to deal with it.
Roofing details normally place fixings where the next course or layer covers them, so the penetration is above the water line.
Where a fixing must be exposed, a fastener with an integral sealing washer is used instead of a plain nail.
Sealant applied over a nail head is a repair rather than a detail and has a short life.
The sheet manufacturer's fixing detail is the authority on where nails may go.
Overdriving a clout dishes the sheet around the head and makes the penetration worse rather than tighter.
How are head size and spacing decided?
Usually by the sheet manufacturer, because tear resistance is a property of the sheet as much as the nail.
Different membranes and sheets tolerate very different fixing patterns.
Spacing is normally closer at edges, laps and perimeters, where uplift is highest.
Head diameter minimums are often stated alongside the spacing.
Exposure and building height change the uplift and therefore the specification, which is why one pattern does not fit every roof.
Following the sheet manufacturer's fixing schedule is also usually a warranty condition.
What else are clout nails used for?
Fencing mesh, tile battens, sarking, soft boards and any thin material fixed to timber.
Wire and mesh fencing uses them because the large head captures the wire without a separate washer.
Sarking and breather membranes need the head area for the same reasons as roofing felt.
Soft insulating boards and fibreboards would be cut through by an ordinary nail head.
Traditional plasterboard nailing used a variant with a similar head, though screws have largely replaced it.
In each case the reason is the same: the material cannot resist a small head.
Should I use a nail or a screw here?
Nails for speed on large areas of soft sheet; screws where the fixing must resist withdrawal or be removable.
Clout nailing a large membrane is far faster than screwing it, and the loads are modest.
Screws with sealing washers are the standard answer where the fixing is exposed to weather.
Battens and anything that may need to come off later are better screwed.
Wind uplift on exposed sites often pushes the specification towards screws or purpose-made fixings with large washers.
The sheet manufacturer's schedule usually settles the question.
