Why use a shaped tool for fan blades?
Because a sleeve that fits over the blade cleans both faces at once and traps the dust instead of pushing it into the room.
A fan blade collects a thick felt of dust on its upper face, which is invisible from below and released the moment the fan is switched on or wiped.
A U-shaped duster with a fabric sleeve slides along the blade, contacting top and bottom simultaneously. The dust is captured inside the sleeve.
Wiping with a cloth from below cleans the face nobody sees the dust on and pushes the upper deposit off the edge onto everything beneath.
The sleeve comes off for laundering or disposal, which keeps the collected dust contained until it reaches a bin.
On an extending handle, the whole job is done from the floor - which is the other reason the tool exists, since fan cleaning otherwise means standing on something.
Does a dusty fan actually matter?
Yes - accumulated dust unbalances the blades, which causes wobble, noise and bearing wear, and the deposit is released into the room whenever the fan runs.
Dust does not settle evenly. One blade carries more than another, and the resulting imbalance shows as wobble at speed, which stresses the mounting and the motor bearings.
The deposit is also a reservoir. Every time the fan starts, some of it is thrown into the air, which matters in bedrooms, food areas and anywhere with allergy concerns.
In food production, an overhead fan carrying dust above an open process is a contamination risk and an audit finding.
Regular cleaning is quick with the right tool, and the interval should follow the environment rather than a calendar - a workshop fan needs it far more often than an office one.
Isolate the fan before cleaning. A blade that starts moving while a tool is on it is dangerous.
How are vents and grilles cleaned properly?
With a slim flexible tool that reaches between the louvres to the internal faces, ideally with a vacuum capturing what is released.
Dust accumulates on the internal edges of louvres and on the leading faces of fins, where it restricts airflow. The visible outer face carries comparatively little.
A slim brush or flexible microfibre tool passes between the blades and reaches those surfaces.
Vacuuming at the same time captures what is dislodged rather than letting it enter the room, and a brush attachment on a vacuum is often the best combination.
For extract grilles, remember the deposit is on the room side because the air is leaving; for supply diffusers it is on the face and the surrounding ceiling.
Where grilles can be removed, washing them properly is far more effective than cleaning in place - but that becomes a maintenance task rather than a cleaning one.
What is the difference between cleaning terminals and cleaning ductwork?
Cleaning grilles and diffusers is routine cleaning; cleaning inside the duct is a specialist job with its own standards and, in some sectors, inspection requirements.
Terminal cleaning addresses what is visible and reachable: the grille, the diffuser face and the immediate surroundings. It is part of a normal cleaning specification.
Duct cleaning addresses the system beyond the terminal and requires access, specialist equipment, containment and verification.
In kitchens, grease extract ductwork is a fire risk and is subject to defined cleaning frequencies and documentation in many jurisdictions, often tied to insurance.
In healthcare and food production, ventilation hygiene is inspected against sector standards.
A cleaning contractor should be clear about which is in scope. Wiping the grille does not discharge a duct cleaning obligation, and clients sometimes assume it does.
Should the tool be used dry or damp?
Dry first to remove loose deposit, then damp for the film that remains - and never damp near live electrical parts.
Dry removal takes off the bulk. Going in damp first turns loose dust into a smear that is harder to remove and leaves streaks.
A damp pass afterwards lifts the greasy film that binds fine dust to the surface, which is common in kitchens and near cooking areas.
Around fan motors, light fittings and electrical terminals, moisture is a hazard and the work should be dry, with the circuit isolated where the tool could contact live parts.
Extract grilles in kitchens are usually greasy enough to need degreasant, which is closer to a deep clean than routine dusting.

How often should fans and vents be cleaned?

Offices and retail accumulate more slowly, and a quarterly cycle is usually adequate.
Healthcare, laboratories and food production usually work to a defined frequency set by sector guidance rather than by observation.
Seasonal use matters: a ceiling fan unused through winter carries a heavy deposit that should be cleaned before it is switched on, not after.
The practical trigger is visible dust on the leading edge of a blade or a grille, which means the deposit is already substantial - by the time it is visible from the floor there is a great deal of it.
What safety precautions apply?
Isolate anything with moving parts, use a pole rather than steps, wear eye protection, and keep moisture away from electrical components.
A ceiling fan must be switched off and, where possible, isolated. Fans can be started from another switch by someone unaware that cleaning is in progress.
Working overhead means dust falling directly toward the face, so eye protection is appropriate and a dust mask is sensible in heavily loaded environments.
Poles remove the ladder from the job and should be the default.
Light fittings, sprinkler heads and detectors are easily damaged by a pole - sprinkler activation from a careless tool is an expensive and well-documented accident.
Cover or move anything beneath the work, and clean the floor afterwards - the dust that comes off has to land somewhere.
