What is the difference between a clarifier and a flocculant?
A clarifier clumps particles so the filter can catch them; a flocculant drops them to the floor to be vacuumed to waste.
Clarifiers are coagulants. They neutralise the charge keeping fine particles apart, and the resulting larger particles are removed by normal filtration over the following day or two. The pool keeps running.
Flocculants create heavy floc that settles. The pool circulation is turned off to let it fall, and the deposit is then vacuumed directly to waste. The pool is out of use and loses a quantity of water.
Clarifier is the routine product for slightly dull or hazy water. Flocculant is for severe cloudiness where waiting for filtration is not practical.
Using a flocculant and then filtering it is the common mistake, and it blocks the filter.
Why is the water cloudy in the first place?
Fine particles the filter cannot catch, poor sanitising, unbalanced water causing precipitation, or a filter that is not working properly.
Fine debris from bathers, dust, pollen and dead algae is the usual cause, and it is the one clarifiers address.
Inadequate chlorine allows organic material and early algae growth to cloud the water. No clarifier fixes that; correcting the sanitiser does.
High pH and high calcium hardness cause calcium to precipitate as a fine haze. The answer is to correct the balance, not to add a clarifier.
A filter that is dirty, undersized, channelled, or running for too few hours cannot keep up. Check run time and filter condition before dosing anything.
Diagnose before treating. Clarifier added to water that is cloudy for a chemistry reason simply adds another product to the problem.
Which filter types can handle these products?
Sand handles both clarifier and flocculant when vacuuming to waste; cartridge and diatomaceous earth filters can be blinded and must never see floc.
Sand filters are the most tolerant and are the filter type flocculation procedures assume, because a multiport valve allows vacuuming to waste.
Cartridge filters cope with most clarifiers but load faster, and cartridges may need cleaning shortly afterwards.
Diatomaceous earth filters are efficient enough that clarifier is rarely needed, and some clarifier chemistries blind the medium.
Flocculant must not be filtered on cartridge or DE systems. Without a waste option, the floc has to be vacuumed out through the filter, which clogs it.
Check the product against the filter before dosing - this is the most common cause of a blocked filter after a clarity treatment.
How long does a clarifier take to work?
Usually a day or two of continuous filtration - it is not an instant product, and adding more does not speed it up.
Coagulation happens quickly, but the filter then has to circulate the entire pool volume several times to capture the clumped particles.
Continuous filtration during that period is essential. Running the pump on a short daily cycle extends the process considerably.
Over-dosing is counterproductive. Excess polymer can itself cloud the water and blind the filter, producing exactly the symptom being treated.
Expect to clean or backwash the filter afterwards, since it will have collected the material.
If two days of proper filtration with a correct dose has not cleared the water, the cause is not filterable particles and the diagnosis needs revisiting.
How is flocculation carried out properly?
Balance the water, dose with circulation running briefly, switch the pump off for several hours, then vacuum the settled floc directly to waste.
Circulation is run just long enough to distribute the product, then stopped so the floc can settle undisturbed. Running the pump keeps particles in suspension and defeats it.
Settling usually takes several hours and is often left overnight.
Vacuuming must be to waste, not through the filter, and slowly - moving quickly stirs the floc back into suspension and the process has to be repeated.
Water loss is significant, so the pool will need refilling and the balance re-checking afterwards.
A manual vacuum is required; robotic cleaners return water through the filter and are not suitable.
Because of the water loss and downtime, flocculation is a recovery operation rather than routine maintenance.
Are clarifiers safe for bathers?
Yes at normal dose rates, and most allow swimming after a short circulation period - but the label governs.
Clarifiers are polymers and coagulants at low concentration and are not sanitisers or hazardous at use dilution.
Circulating for the stated period distributes the dose and avoids swimmers encountering concentrated product.
The practical issue during treatment is visibility. Cloudy water is a safety concern in its own right - if the bottom of the pool cannot be seen clearly, most operating standards require it to be closed.
Flocculation always means closure, because the floc on the floor must not be disturbed.
Public pools should follow their operating standard on reopening after any chemical treatment, which usually requires a verified test and clear water.
Can clarifier be used routinely?
Yes, and a small regular dose is common on heavily used pools - it improves filter efficiency and keeps water noticeably brighter.
Routine low-dose clarifier helps the filter capture fine material it would otherwise pass, which produces water that looks visibly better.
It is particularly useful on pools with high bather loads, on sand filters, and where the fill water carries fine sediment.
The filter has to be maintained to match. Capturing more material means backwashing or cleaning more often, and neglecting that reverses the benefit.
It should not be used to compensate for an undersized filter, a short run time or poor chemistry - those are the actual faults.
Follow the maintenance rate rather than the treatment rate, and stop if the water becomes hazy after dosing, which indicates over-application.
