Which protector suits which end?
It follows what is on the end rather than the pipe's size.
A male thread or a bevel takes a cap over the outside.
A female thread or a machined bore takes a plug inside.
A flange face takes a protector covering the face and bolt holes.
Tube takes protectors suited to thinner wall and finer surfaces.
Identifying the end condition first narrows it immediately.
What do all of them have in common?
They protect a small area of expensive geometry rather than the pipe.
The body of the pipe tolerates handling perfectly well.
Threads, bevels, flange faces and bores do not.
Damage to those is disproportionately costly to put right.
They also all have to survive months of storage outdoors.
That combination of duties is what defines the whole family.
What makes a protector stay on?
Gripping rather than resting on the end.
It has to survive dragging, stacking, slinging and storage.
Designs that grip the thread itself protect it better.
A loose cover falls off at the first handling.
It also has to come off without tools that could damage the surface.
Those two requirements pull against each other, which is why the design varies.
Where do specifications differ most across the family?
In retention and in UV resistance rather than in the covering itself.
A protector that falls off in a stack protects nothing.
Flange protectors locate into bolt holes to stay put.
Caps and plugs grip the thread or the bore.
All of them become brittle in sunlight unless stabilised.
Those two properties decide whether protection survives to installation.
Are flange protectors different from end caps?
Yes - they protect a face rather than close a bore.
A flange protector covers the machined sealing face and the bolt holes.
An end cap closes the bore against ingress.
Many flange protectors do both by covering the whole end.
Bolt-hole location features stop the protector rotating.
Raised-face and ring-type-joint flanges need protectors suited to that face.
Can protectors be re-used?
Often yes, and on a large project that is a meaningful saving.
They are usually removed at installation and discarded.
Collecting and re-using them reduces both cost and waste.
Cracked, deformed or UV-degraded ones should not go back on.
Some are made specifically for repeated use.
Where pipe is stored again after partial use, re-capping deserves the same attention the original protection got.
Do they need to be removed before welding?
Always, and it is worth stating because it does get missed.
Plastic left near a weld melts and contaminates the joint.
It also produces fumes that are hazardous in confined spaces.
Bevel protectors sit exactly where the weld goes.
Checking the bore is clear before closing a system is the same discipline.
Counting protectors off is used on critical pipework for that reason.
