How do I know suspension parts are worn if nothing feels wrong?

Look at the tyres and the vehicle's behaviour rather than waiting for a noise - degradation here is gradual enough that drivers adapt to it.

Uneven tyre wear is the most reliable early indicator. Feathering, inner or outer edge wear, and cupping each point at a different cause.

A vehicle that follows road camber, wanders in crosswinds or needs constant small corrections has usually lost geometry or gained free play.

Excessive body movement over undulations, or a nose that keeps moving after a bump, indicates dampers that have lost control even if none is leaking.

A physical inspection finds what driving does not: play at the joints, split boots, perished bushes, corroded springs and damp damper bodies.

For fleets, a scheduled inspection with a defined checklist finds these long before a driver reports anything, and tyre wear data is the cheapest leading indicator available.

Do parts have to be replaced in pairs?

Dampers, springs and struts yes, as axle pairs. Joints and bushes only where both sides have worn.

Dampers and springs determine how each side of the vehicle responds. Mismatching them creates asymmetric handling that is worse than symmetrical wear.

A new damper alongside a tired one also loads the new unit differently and shortens its life.

Ball joints, tie rod ends and bushes can legitimately be replaced individually if only one has failed - though in practice both sides have done the same work, and the second usually follows.

Where the labour overlaps substantially, doing both sides at once is cheaper overall even if only one has failed.

Front and rear axles are independent, so there is no requirement to do all four corners together.

Is wheel alignment always necessary afterwards?

After replacing anything that locates a wheel, yes - and that includes control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends, struts and most bushings.

Alignment is the set of angles that determine how the tyre meets the road. Those angles are defined by the positions of the locating components.

Replacing one changes the geometry, sometimes substantially, and there is no way to restore the previous settings by fitting carefully.

Skipping alignment shows up as rapid, uneven tyre wear within weeks, which costs more than the alignment.

Dampers alone do not change geometry, so a damper-only replacement does not require alignment - though a strut, which locates the hub, does.

Check the vehicle is at correct ride height and correctly laden for the specification before measuring, since both change the readings.

How dangerous is spring work?

Genuinely dangerous. A compressed coil spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and it releases all of it at once if the compressor slips.

Use a proper spring compressor rated for the spring, ideally a fixed workshop unit rather than a hook-type tool, and follow its method.

Never use mismatched or damaged compressor jaws, and never leave a compressed spring set aside on a bench.

Corroded springs are the worst case: rust hides cracks and the spring can fracture while being compressed.

Pre-assembled strut units - a new strut, spring and top mount supplied together - remove the need to compress anything and are frequently the better purchase once labour and risk are counted.

Where springs must be handled, it belongs to trained staff with the right equipment rather than to whoever is free.

Which fasteners can be reused?

Fewer than most people assume - suspension is full of torque-to-yield bolts, self-locking nuts and single-use fixings.

A torque-to-yield fastener is deliberately stretched past its elastic limit on tightening and cannot be reused reliably.

Nylon-insert and all-metal prevailing-torque nuts lose their locking function after removal.

The manufacturer's procedure names which are single-use, and modern suspension kits usually supply replacements.

Torque figures matter as much: many suspension fixings have an angle-tightening stage after an initial torque, and skipping it leaves the joint under-clamped.

Corroded fasteners on older or high-mileage vehicles should be replaced whether or not they are single-use, because they will not torque accurately.

Why do bushings have to be torqued at ride height?

Because a rubber bush is bonded to both its sleeves - it twists rather than rotates, so it must be clamped in the position it will normally sit in.

Tightening a bush with the suspension hanging locks the rubber in a twisted state permanently.

Once the vehicle is lowered, the bush is pre-loaded and works against that twist through its whole life, which tears it out within months.

The correct method is to support the hub at normal ride height before final tightening, or to lower the vehicle onto its wheels first where access allows.

Polyurethane bushes generally rotate on the sleeve rather than twisting, so they are less sensitive - but they transmit more noise and need periodic lubrication.

What does a fleet inspection need to cover?

Play at every joint, damper condition, spring integrity, boot condition, bush wear and tyre wear pattern - as a checklist rather than a look.

Joint play is checked with the wheel loaded or unloaded depending on the design, and using the method the manufacturer specifies rather than by rocking the wheel.

Dampers are assessed for leakage, corrosion and bounce response, though a unit can be worn out without leaking.

Springs are inspected for fractures - usually near the ends - and for corrosion, particularly on vehicles used where roads are salted.

Split boots on ball joints, tie rod ends and steering racks admit water and grit, and a split boot is a failed joint in waiting.

Recording tyre wear patterns at every service turns the tyres into a continuous diagnostic for the whole system, at no additional cost.
