What arc does a pivot door need outside the shower?

Less than a fully hinged leaf of the same width, because the pivot is set in from the edge and the portion behind the pivot swings inward as the front swings out.

The figure that matters is the projection of the leading edge at its furthest point, and it is usually quoted by the manufacturer.

Measuring the real obstruction — a basin, a towel rail, the door of the room — against that projection is the check to make before ordering, not the width of the room.

Where is the pivot and does it wear?

Top and bottom, set in from the leading edge, and yes it is the wear point. The entire weight of the leaf and every push and pull passes through those two points.

Wear shows as the door dropping slightly, catching on the tray at the closing edge, or no longer holding itself shut.

Better ranges use a serviceable bearing at the pivot rather than a sealed pin, so the part can be renewed without replacing the door, and that is worth checking at purchase.

Does it self-close?

Many do, in the sense that the geometry brings the leaf back toward closed over the last part of its travel, because the offset pivot creates a slight over-centre action.

That is helpful in use and is not the same as a sprung closer; it will not pull a door shut from wide open.

Where the door drifts open on its own instead, the usual cause is the enclosure being out of plumb rather than a fault in the pivot, and it is corrected by adjusting the wall profile.

Can a pivot door open inward as well?

The leaf behind the pivot does swing inward by design, which is part of how the mechanism works, but the door as a whole is an outward opener.

That inward portion is why a pivot door needs clear space just inside the enclosure too — a fixed seat or a shelf close to the hinge side can foul it.

Where a fully inward-opening leaf is needed, for example so the door cannot be blocked from outside, that is a different product and should be specified as such.

Where does the closing edge seal, and against what?

With a magnetic strip on the leading edge meeting the fixed panel, plus a drip seal along the bottom of the leaf.

The magnetic strip does two jobs — it seals and it holds the door shut — so when it hardens with age the door starts both leaking and drifting open, which can look like two separate faults.

Replacing the strip is inexpensive and usually restores both behaviours at once, which is worth trying before concluding the door is worn out.
