What do the R ratings on anti-slip tiles actually mean?

The classes in practice:

  • R9 — minimum grip: dry interiors only (halls, shops). On a wet terrace it is a hazard, not a rating.

  • R11 — the outdoor baseline: terraces, balconies, and paths exposed to rain. Most quality 20 mm outdoor porcelain is R11.

Reading them intelligently: the ratings are comparative lab classes, not guarantees — real grip also depends on footwear, contamination, and maintenance; a dirty R12 grips worse than a clean R11. Ratings describe the surface as manufactured — heavy wear or gloss-sealing can degrade real performance. And R numbers apply to shoes; barefoot zones use the separate A/B/C scale (its own FAQ). What is the difference between R ratings and the A/B/C barefoot ratings?

The comfort note: within B/C classes, finishes vary from micro-textured (kind to skin, harder to achieve high class) to raised-structure (maximum grip, less lounging comfort) — sample tiles underfoot, wet, before committing a whole pool surround; certified grip that guests avoid walking on barefoot has missed the brief sideways.

Where should anti-slip tiles be used - and where are they overkill?

Where standard outdoor texture (R11) simply does its job without special measures: ordinary domestic terraces and paths with decent falls, covered loggias, and dry-climate patios — the mainstream 20 mm porcelain and textured stone market exists exactly for these.

Where aggressive ratings are genuine overkill: R13-class structured tiles on a domestic dining terrace trade real costs — harder cleaning (texture holds dirt), rougher barefoot feel, chair-scrape noise — for grip nobody needed; likewise C-class pool textures in a courtyard that hosts one paddling pool a summer.

The design method: zone the project — map where water stands, where levels change, where bare feet run — and specify by zone rather than blanket-rating the whole surface. Are anti-slip tiles harder to clean than smooth tiles?

What materials do anti-slip outdoor tiles come in?

Do anti-slip tiles lose their grip over time?

They can — grip is a surface property, and surfaces have lives — but the mechanisms are known and mostly preventable:
