What is actually in a kit?
A finished article rather than components.
Pre-cut self-regulating cable, already terminated.
A moulded plug and integral thermostat.
Fixing tape to attach it to the pipe.
Nothing to design, terminate or calculate.
That convenience is the whole product.
What is it built for?
Short known runs with a socket nearby.
Domestic and light commercial pipework.
Unheated garages, lofts and outside taps.
Caravans and small pump houses.
For those it beats anything assembled on site.
Faster and cheaper both.
Can a kit be extended?
No, and this is the common misuse.
Length is fixed at manufacture.
Joining two kits is not supported.
Adding cable is not either.
A longer run needs a designed circuit.
Buy the length required, or design it properly.
What are the limits of the integral thermostat?
It senses at one point on the run.
That works on a short uniform length.
A long run through varied conditions misleads it.
Part of the pipe may freeze while it reads warm.
Designed circuits place sensors deliberately.
Kits cannot do that.
Is insulation still needed?
Yes, and it does most of the work.
An uninsulated pipe loses heat faster than the kit replaces it.
The cable then runs continuously.
It may still freeze in severe conditions.
Insulate over the cable as part of installation.
It is not an optional improvement.
What about the electrical supply?
Usually a plug into an existing socket.
There is no fixed connection.
Protection is whatever the socket provides.
The socket must be suitable for the location.
Outdoor and damp positions need appropriate rating.
A permanent installation wants a fixed circuit.
When should a designed circuit be used instead?
Long runs, or varied conditions along them.
Where the connection must be permanent.
Where a process temperature has to be maintained.
Where monitoring or alarms are wanted.
Where the pipework may change later.
A larger kit is not the answer to any of these.
