Which sets the salt and water use.
Timer head or metered head?
Metered, on any variable demand.
A timer regenerates on a schedule.
Whether the resin needs it or not.
A meter counts water actually used.
And regenerates when the bed is spent.
Does that difference really matter?
On a steady household, moderately.
On a variable one, considerably.
A timer regenerates through a week away.
Using full salt for no softening at all.
A holiday home shows it most starkly.
Why is the head what fails?
It holds all the moving parts.
Seals, piston or rotary disc, injector.
Resin lasts years and the vessel longer.
Nothing else in the unit wears.
So faults concentrate in one assembly.
It runs to drain constantly - what is it?
Nearly always a head fault.
A worn seal or a stuck piston.
It stays in a regeneration position.
A seal kit usually resolves it.
The unit itself is fine.
It is not drawing brine - what then?
Usually the injector, or its screen.
A blocked injector cannot pull brine.
So the resin is never recharged.
Water goes to drain and nothing softens.
Both parts are replaceable.
How do I find the right part?
By the valve, not by the softener badge.
A few valve makers supply many brands.
The label is on the valve body.
Make and model number are on it.
The cabinet badge will not identify it.
