Why does woven mesh need edging when welded mesh often does not?
Because woven wires are interlaced rather than joined, so a cut edge releases them and the mesh progressively unravels. It needs binding, a folded and crimped edge, a welded margin or a frame to be usable. Welded and crimped mesh hold their geometry when cut, so edging there addresses sharp ends and appearance rather than structural integrity.
What edging options are available?
U-channel and binding strip crimped or welded over the edge, PVC and rubber push-on trim for safety on cut ends, folded and hemmed edges formed in the mesh itself, and full frames in angle, formed section or tube. Choice follows whether the requirement is retaining wires, covering sharp ends, or providing a fixing point.
What are hog rings and C-rings used for?
Fastening mesh to a frame or to another sheet of mesh by closing a metal ring around both with a dedicated pliers or pneumatic tool. They are quick, need no drilling and suit cages, enclosures, guards and filter assemblies. Ring material should match the mesh to avoid galvanic corrosion and staining.
Should fixings match the mesh material?
Yes. A mild steel or zinc-plated clip on stainless mesh will corrode preferentially and streak rust down the panel, and in wet conditions the galvanic couple accelerates it. Match stainless to stainless and galvanised to galvanised, and where dissimilar metals are unavoidable use an isolating washer or bush.
What fixings are used for machine guarding?
Panel clips and mesh connectors to join adjacent panels, brackets and standoffs to mount them at the required safety distance from the hazard, and security or tamper-resistant fasteners where the guard must not be removable without a tool. Guarding standards govern both the aperture and the distance, so the fixing system is part of compliance.
How are screen deck panels tensioned?
Through hooked edges formed on the panel that engage the tensioning rails on the screen box, tightened by the machine's own tensioning hardware. The hook angle and dimensions are specific to the screen, so replacement panels must be ordered against the machine. Correct tension is what stops the panel flexing and failing early.
Can frames be supplied made up with mesh fitted?
Commonly, yes - framed mesh panels are supplied as finished units with the mesh welded, clamped or captured in a channel, ready to install. This is usual for machine guards, sieve elements, filter screens and partition systems, and it removes the edge termination and squareness problems that arise when framing mesh on site.
