Why not just use a probed test respirator?
It works, but it tests a mask that is not the one the wearer will actually use.
A probed test mask is identical in specification but not the same physical item.
It is also not adjusted the way that person adjusts theirs.
Adapters let the wearer's own respirator be tested without permanent modification.
That is a genuinely better test of what they will wear.
It also avoids sacrificing an expensive full-face respirator to permanent probing.
Are adapters interchangeable between respirators?

How are disposable respirators tested quantitatively?
With a probe fitted through the mask material using a probe kit, after which the mask is discarded.
Disposable masks cannot easily accept an adapter.
The probe is inserted with a tool designed for the purpose.
The probed mask is used once for the test and not returned to service.
It must be the same make, model and size as the mask the person will wear.
