Accidental operation from impact is a significant cause of unwanted discharge and water damage.
Forklift masts, long loads, ball games and deliberate interference are the usual mechanisms.
Guards are listed with specific heads because a cage that alters the spray pattern is worse than none.

Why does a sprinkler wrench matter so much?

Spares are kept in a dedicated cabinet at a stated maximum temperature, near the riser.

Can escutcheons and guards be bought generically?
No - both are listed with specific heads, and generic equivalents are not acceptable.
The listing is what establishes that the component does not degrade the head's performance.
Physical fit is not evidence of suitability.

Substitution is a common shortcut during fit-out and a common inspection finding.
Cost differences are small compared with the consequence of an unlisted combination.
What happens if a head is installed with the wrong wrench?
It may leak immediately, or it may fail silently and be discovered only in a fire.

None of this is visible from below once the head is installed.

How are the right components identified for an existing system?
From the as-built record and from the markings on the heads themselves.
Every sprinkler head carries markings identifying manufacturer, model, temperature rating and orientation.
Those markings are what allow a matching replacement, escutcheon and wrench to be sourced.
Older systems with obsolete heads can be difficult, and some head types have been subject to recall.
Where a head model is no longer available, replacement of a whole area may be the only compliant route.
Maintaining the as-built record through alterations is what prevents that situation.
