Why crimp the wire before weaving?
Because the crimps interlock the wires mechanically and hold the aperture without welding. That allows much heavier wire than a plain weave can control, and avoids the heat of welding, which would soften the hardened wire that abrasive screening duty depends on. It is what makes heavy screen mesh possible.
What are the different crimp styles for?
Double crimp is the general-purpose form, crimped at every intersection. Intercrimp adds crimps between intersections so that relatively fine apertures can be held in thick wire. Lock crimp seats wires into pre-formed knuckles for a flat, dimensionally stable panel. Flat top leaves one surface smooth to help material flow across a screen deck.
What materials are used for screen mesh?
High carbon spring steel and manganese steel dominate, because abrasion resistance rather than corrosion resistance governs screen life in aggregate, ore and coal duty. Stainless steel is used where the material handled is corrosive or where hygiene applies, accepting shorter wear life for the chemical performance.
How does crimped mesh compare with welded mesh for screening?
Crimped mesh is made from heavier, harder wire and is not heat-affected at the intersections, so it lasts far longer under abrasion and can be tensioned on a vibrating deck. Welded mesh is rigid and cut-stable, which suits guarding and enclosures, but its welds are softened points that fail quickly under abrasive impact.
What edge details are available on screen panels?
Hooked edges are standard for panels tensioned across a vibrating screen box, formed to match the machine's tensioning rails, and the hook angle and dimensions must suit the specific screen. Plain, bound and framed edges are supplied for architectural, guarding and static screening applications where no tensioning is involved.
Can crimped mesh be used architecturally?
It is a common decorative and functional material for facade infill, balustrade panels, ceiling and partition screens and machine surrounds. The visible crimp gives depth and texture, the heavy wire reads as robust, and stainless or coated finishes are used where appearance and durability both matter.
How is crimped mesh specified?
Aperture, wire diameter, crimp style, material and panel size, plus the edge detail. For screening duty the aperture and wire diameter together set the open area and therefore the throughput, and there is a direct trade-off: heavier wire lasts longer but reduces open area and screening capacity.
