It is classified as E plus a time.
Radiated heat still passes through.
That is the important limitation.
Why does radiated heat matter?
It can ignite materials on the safe side.
And it can prevent people passing.
The glass is intact and the route is unusable.
Integrity alone does not address this.
Insulation is what does.
What is insulation?
It limits temperature rise on the safe face.
People can pass close to it.
Adjacent materials will not ignite.
It is classified as EI plus a time.
Usually a laminate with intumescent layers.
How do the two compare in price?
EI costs substantially more.
It is a more complex product.
Both look identical once installed.
Only one protects an escape route.
Choosing E where EI was needed is the error.
Does the rating belong to the glass?
No, to the whole assembly.
The pane is tested in a specific frame.
With specific beads, seals and fixings.
The certificate describes that system.
Substituting any part invalidates it.
Does it also resist impact?
Not automatically, no.
Fire rating and impact safety are separate.
Both may be required in the same opening.
Specify each explicitly.
Tested sizes are also limited.
