How is a dry sprinkler different from a dry pipe system?

A dry sprinkler is a single head extending a wet system into a cold place; a dry pipe system fills a whole network with air.

The dry sprinkler's water sits behind a seal at the warm end of its barrel.

The rest of the system remains a normal wet system, full of water.

A dry pipe system keeps the entire network under compressed air with a differential valve at the riser.

Dry sprinklers are the answer for a small cold area in an otherwise heated building.

Dry pipe systems are the answer where the whole protected space is unheated.

Why is barrel length so critical?

The seal must sit inside genuinely heated space, and the barrel cannot be altered afterwards.

Manufacturers specify a minimum length of barrel that must be within the warm envelope.

Ordered short, the seal ends up in the cold, the water behind it freezes and the head cannot operate.

That failure is completely invisible - the installation looks entirely normal.

Barrels are not field-adjustable, so a wrong length means reordering.

Insulation around the barrel is not a substitute for correct length.

When do dry sprinklers have to be ordered?

Once construction dimensions are known - which makes them a long-lead item and a frequent cause of delay.

The barrel length depends on wall or ceiling build-up that may not be finalised early.

Ordering before the dimension is fixed risks a barrel that cannot be used.

Manufacturing lead times for made-to-length barrels are longer than for standard heads.

Programmes that leave dry sprinklers to the fit-out stage regularly run into this.

Measuring on site rather than from drawings is the reliable approach, since build-ups change.

Where are dry sprinklers typically used?

Loading dock canopies, unheated lobbies, projecting soffits, freezers and cold stores.

Any small cold area served by an otherwise warm building is the classic case.

External canopies and porches attached to heated buildings are very common.

Walk-in freezers and cold stores use them where a full dry pipe system would be disproportionate.

Attics and roof voids above heated space are another frequent application.

Where the whole area is unheated and large, a dry pipe system is usually more economic.

Are they suitable for freezers without modification?

Not automatically - moisture migrating into the barrel and freezing is a specific cold-store problem.

Repeated temperature cycling can draw moisture into the barrel over time.

Ice forming inside the tube prevents water reaching the head when it operates.

Listed cold-store designs address this with specific sealing and construction features.

A general dry sprinkler is not automatically suitable for a freezer application.

The manufacturer's listing states the temperature range and application the head is approved for.

Can a dry sprinkler be repositioned?

Not easily - the barrel is a fixed length and the position depends on it.

Moving the head means either a new barrel length or moving the pipework connection.

Small adjustments are sometimes possible through escutcheon and mounting detail.

Anything more requires a replacement head ordered to the new dimension.

That is another reason to fix positions before ordering rather than after.

Alterations to a building years later frequently run into this, since the original heads cannot simply be relocated.

Do they need different inspection?

The same regime as any sprinkler, with particular attention to whether the warm end is still warm.

Building alterations can change where the heated envelope actually is.

A removed heater, a changed partition or a new opening can leave a barrel seal in the cold.

Ice formation and physical damage to exposed barrels are the other things to look for.

Because the failure mode is invisible from outside, this is one of the areas where documentation of the original design matters.

Inspection intervals and requirements follow the local regime as for any sprinkler component.
