What is it deciding?

Whether to use rain or mains.

Continuously, from a level sensor.

Rain while there is usable water.

Mains when the level falls too low.

And back again when it rains.

How does mains water enter?

Through an air gap, always.

The mains discharges into open air.

Above a break tank.

And the rainwater side draws from below.

There is no connected path.

Why not simply use a valve?

Because a valve depends on working.

It can fail open or fail closed.

Or be replaced with the wrong part.

By somebody who did not know why.

A gap cannot do any of that.

How would I know the system is working?

Only from what the unit reports.

Level, backup status and pump running.

Plus fault indication.

Without those, nothing is visible.

The taps behave identically either way.

Is that a real failure mode?

A common one, and entirely silent.

A system running on mains for a year.

Looks and behaves exactly the same.

Nobody notices until a bill is compared.

Or somebody opens the unit.

What does dry-run protection do?

Stops the pump when the tank empties.

Faster than the level control expected.

A pump running dry overheats.

And destroys its own seals.

In minutes rather than hours.

Which position suits the unit?

Where it has power and drainage.

The break tank overflow needs somewhere.

And it has to be reachable.

Which usually means a plant room.

Or a garage, rather than underground.
