What are FKM flange gaskets used for?
FKM flange gaskets are used to create a secure, leak-proof seal between two flanged sections of a piping system. These gaskets are made from FKM, a fluoroelastomer known for its exceptional resistance to heat, chemicals and oils. They are particularly suitable for applications involving aggressive chemicals, high temperatures and demanding process environments, which is why they are common in chemical processing, petroleum refining and fuel handling systems.
How do FKM gaskets compare to other gasket materials?
FKM, a fluoroelastomer, is known for exceptional chemical resistance, particularly to oils, fuels and a wide range of solvents. It performs well in high-temperature environments, withstanding continuous service around 204°C (400°F) and in some grades higher. That makes it suitable for automotive, aerospace and chemical processing duties.
Against the alternatives in this family: Buna-N is cheaper and good with oil but poor with heat and many solvents; EPDM handles steam and water but is attacked by petroleum products; PTFE resists almost everything chemically but has little elastic recovery. FKM sits where chemical breadth and heat have to be met together.
What is the temperature range for FKM gaskets?
The usable range for FKM gaskets typically spans about -20°C to 204°C (-4°F to 400°F). Specialised grades extend that, with some low-temperature formulations usable to around -40°C (-40°F) and high-temperature grades reaching approximately 230°C (446°F).
The low end is the limit worth checking carefully. FKM stiffens as it cools and loses the elastic recovery a gasket depends on, so a joint that seals perfectly in service can weep on a cold start. Where a system sees genuinely low temperatures, a low-temperature grade should be specified rather than a standard one.
Are FKM gaskets resistant to chemicals and oils?
Yes. FKM is a fluoroelastomer with excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, oils and fuels, which is the property that defines it and the reason it is specified in the automotive, aerospace and chemical processing industries where exposure to harsh substances is routine.
Its resistance is broad rather than universal. FKM is attacked by hot water and steam, by ketones and by some amines and esters, and those are exactly the media where EPDM or PTFE is the better answer. Chemical compatibility should always be checked against the specific medium, concentration and temperature rather than assumed from the material name.
How long do FKM gaskets last in industrial applications?
Service life varies with operating conditions, the grade selected and the maintenance regime, but FKM gaskets are known for durability and commonly last from around 5 to 20 years or more under favourable conditions.
The factors that shorten it are heat above the grade’s continuous rating, chemical attack from an incompatible medium, over-compression at installation, and repeated thermal cycling that works the joint. Correct bolt torque and sequence matter more than most operators expect, since a gasket crushed beyond its recovery range will not re-seal after the first thermal cycle.
