Why does the drain need a standpipe?
Because the machine pumps its water out.
It leaves under pressure, not by gravity.
The standpipe takes that burst.
And gives it somewhere to fall.
A plain hose connection cannot.
How high should the standpipe be?
Within the range the maker states.
High enough that it cannot overflow.
Low enough for the pump to lift to.
Both limits matter, not just the top one.
The figures are in the appliance manual.
Why does the machine smell of drains?
The trap seal has usually been lost.
A pumped discharge can siphon it out.
Especially if the standpipe is unvented.
Or the hose is pushed too far down it.
Refill the trap and check the hose depth.
How far should the hose go in?
Only just inside the standpipe.
An air gap has to remain around it.
Pushed to the bottom it seals the pipe.
Then the machine gurgles and drains slowly.
Most hoses have a guide for the depth.
Why put the valves in the wall at all?
So the machine can stand flat.
Valves and tails otherwise project.
And push the appliance forward.
The recess takes them out of the way.
It also keeps them reachable.
Does the isolation valve matter that much?
It is the flood you can actually stop.
Burst machine hoses are common.
A valve behind the appliance is no use.
In the box face it is reachable.
Turn them off when away for a while.
What is a hammer arrestor for?
The bang when the machine shuts a valve.
It closes fast and the water stops dead.
That shock travels back down the pipe.
An arrestor gives it somewhere to go.
Some boxes have them built in.
