Why must there be an air gap?

So rainwater can never reach the mains.

Mains water falls through open air.

Into the rainwater side.

No back-siphonage can cross a gap.

And no failure can close it.

Could a valve do the same job?

No, and that is the point.

A valve can fail or be fitted wrongly.

A physical gap cannot do either.

The separation must be structural.

Not dependent on anything working.

Why is the pipework labelled?

So nobody mistakes it later.

For a drinking water supply.

Alterations happen years afterwards.

By people who were not there.

Marking is how they are told.
