What separates this from a packaged rooftop unit?
There is no refrigeration machinery in the cabinet.
The coils are fed from plant elsewhere.
That may be chilled water or a remote circuit.
A packaged unit carries its own compressors.
The two look similar and are not the same thing.
Why put an air handler on the roof at all?
To recover the floor area it would otherwise occupy.
Large units take a great deal of space.
That area can be sold, let or used instead.
The central plant arrangement is unchanged.
Only the unit's position moves.
What does the casing have to do outdoors?
Behave as an external envelope, not an enclosure.
Weathertightness holds against driving rain and wind.
Insulation resists solar gain in summer.
It resists heat loss in winter as well.
Both act directly on the air inside.
Why does casing leakage cost more here?
Air lost outside is lost from the building entirely.
Indoors it leaks into a plant room within the envelope.
Some of that energy is recovered incidentally.
Outdoors none of it is.
Leakage class is worth specifying deliberately.
How does servicing differ?
Every task happens on a roof in real weather.
Filter changes, belt checks and coil cleaning included.
Doors must open safely in wind.
Walkways and permanent access are needed.
None of it can be improvised later.
What structural work does it need?
Support sized for the operating weight.
That includes water in the coils and any snow load.
Steel framing or a purpose-built support is common.
Loading is confirmed at design, not on delivery.
Access provision is planned at the same time.
Can it be configured like an indoor unit?
Yes, from the same range of sections.
Filtration, coils, recovery and fan are all available.
The casing specification is what changes.
Weather louvres and hoods are added where needed.
The internal arrangement follows the same logic.
