How is this different from a filter?

A filter removes something.

These change the water instead.

By adding a chemical, or applying a field.

Nothing is taken out.

The analysis is largely unchanged.

Is scale protection the same as softening?

No, and the difference matters.

A softener removes the hardness.

Scale protection leaves it there.

And stops it depositing.

The water is exactly as hard as before.

So it will still mark glasses?

Yes, and still need the same detergent.

And still read hard on a test.

Because nothing has been removed.

What it should not do is coat a heat exchanger.

Which is what it is for.

What are the two duties here?

Protecting equipment, and water safety.

Scale protection guards heat exchangers.

Disinfection dosing guards people.

They are very different obligations.

And should not be conflated.

What comes with a disinfection duty?

Monitoring, control and records.

A residual has to be measured.

Not assumed from a dose setting.

And the readings kept.

A scale system carries none of that.

What must be true of anything dosed?

It must be approved for potable use.

Which is the first question, not a detail.

A chemical fine in a heating circuit.

Is not automatically fine in drinking water.

Check the approval before the performance.

Is it fit and forget?

None of it is.

Dose rates drift and cartridges empty.

Fields do nothing if the unit has failed.

An unmonitored system is an assumption.

Not a treatment.
